The Karai is a butterfly-like insect, aquatic and lake-dwelling, best known for its thin, glowing, glass-like wings. When caught in the light, these wings glitter across a lake's water surface in a manner strikingly similar to how a fairy's own skin glitters — a resemblance close enough that the creature has picked up the nickname "Lake Fae" among those who study it.

That resemblance runs deeper than folklore. Witches have long labeled preserved Karai wings as "Fae Wings," collecting and using them in potion-making in the belief that they were harvesting fairy wings. The confusion is significant enough to have become a root cause of the recurring, centuries-long war between witches and fairies, each side believing the other is at fault over a resource neither fully understands.

Karai are most visibly encountered during the winter solstice, when their wings produce a shimmering light display across lake surfaces — an event significant enough that people traditionally travel to the water's edge to witness it.

The creature is formally studied as a subject of academic interest, appearing as a chapter subject in at least one textbook on aquatic creature care.
