Angahaki

Habitat: Streams, rivers, ponds, marshes and artificial water features
Disposition: Harmless to larger beings; predatory toward small animals
 

The Angahaki is a small, highly specialised mollusc-like creature roughly the size of a clementine. Its soft, slate-grey body has a leathery, loose-skinned appearance and extends from a long spiral shell fused directly to its backbone. The shell grows with the Angahaki from birth, providing a sturdy natural defence against predators.
 

It possesses two short front legs tipped with distinctive purple adhesive pads. These allow the creature to cling securely to wet stone, tree bark and other slippery surfaces, even behind falling water or beneath the surface of shallow pools. Angahaki are commonly found near freshwater streams, rivers, ponds and marshy landscapes, and may also inhabit decorative garden pools and magical water features.
 

The Angahaki’s most distinctive feature is its elongated, extendable neck, which can stretch several times the length of its body. This allows it to strike at nearby prey without abandoning the security of its shell or its anchored position. It primarily feeds on insects, small amphibians and aquatic larvae. Its long, flexible antennae detect vibrations through water and damp surfaces, while its small red compound eyes are adapted to track movement in low-light conditions.
 

Angahaki are sometimes deliberately introduced to ponds and water features as a natural form of pest control. They prevent insects and small animals from gathering around or damaging these locations and can live behind waterfalls without disrupting magical mirages or other visual effects.
